SUMMARY:FST Distinguished Talk – Recent Progress on Hamilton–Ivey-Type Curvature Pinching for Ricci SolitonsSpeaker: Dr. Huai-Dong CAO from Lehigh UniversityHosted by: Prof. Chang Feng GUI
Huai-Dong Cao delivered a compelling seminar at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Macau on 8 January 2026\, titled “Recent Progress on Hamilton-Ivey-Type Curvature Pinching for Ricci Solitons.” He began with a clear overview of the classical Hamilton-Ivey estimate—central to 3D Ricci flow—which asserts that positive curvature dominates negative curvature near singularities\, ensuring non-negative sectional curvature in blow-up limits like steady or shrinking solitons. \nHe then presented recent joint work with Junming Xie\, extending these pinching estimates to higher dimensions and\, notably\, to asymptotically conical expanding solitons. These advances deepen our understanding of singularity formation and long-time behavior in Ricci flow and offer new tools for classifying soliton geometries. \nDr. Cao’s seminar balanced technical precision with intuitive insight\, engaging an audience of students\, postdocs\, and faculty. The lively Q&A touched on applications to other flows and links to major results like the Poincaré conjecture. His distinguished background—Ph.D. under Shing-Tung Yau\, faculty positions at top institutions\, and prestigious fellowships—underscored his authority in geometric analysis. \nDr.

SUMMARY:FST MO-HQ Distinguished Talk Series – Extreme Problems of Dirichlet Eigenvalues – A RevisitSpeaker: Prof. Fanghua LIN from New York UniversityHosted by: Prof. Chang Feng GUI
DESCRIPTION:Talk Review 活動回顧\nThe Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Macau hosted a distinguished Talk by Prof. Fanghua Lin\, a world-renowned mathematician and member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. In his lecture\, Prof. Lin revisited the classical yet deeply challenging topic of extreme problems associated with Dirichlet eigenvalues of the Laplacian. \nThe talk began with an introduction to Weyl’s asymptotic formula\, which describes the qualitative behavior of large eigenvalues on bounded domains in Euclidean space. Prof. Lin skillfully bridged classical results with contemporary research\, highlighting recent advances in obtaining more quantitative estimates. He discussed the well-known Polya’s conjecture and explored several natural variational and extreme problems related to eigenvalues\, offering insight into both theoretical and applied implications. Prof. Lin’s presentation was both rigorous and accessible\, striking a balance between deep mathematical detail and intuitive explanation. He engaged the audience with clear examples and historical context\, making complex topics such as spectral geometry and PDE theory approachable for graduate students and faculty alike. The talk was particularly enriched by Prof. Lin’s distinguished background\, which includes seminal contributions to Ginzburg-Landau theory\, partial differential equations\, and geometric measure theory. \nThis Distinguished Talk was not only a testament to Prof. Lin’s scholarly excellence but also a valuable academic event that inspired further inquiry into one of mathematics’ enduring and evolving domains. \nFang Hua Lin delivered talk at FST林芳華教授在澳大開講 Chang Feng GUI presented a gift to Prof Fanghua LIN桂長峰教授致送紀念品予林芳華教授

SUMMARY:FST Distinguished Talk – From the Variational Principle to the Inverse Function TheoremSpeaker: Dr. Ivar I. Ekeland from French National Centre for Scientific Research
DESCRIPTION:Talk Review 活動回顧\nFaculty of Science and Technology (FST) at the University of Macau hosted a distinguished lecture by Prof. Ivar I. Ekeland\, world-renowned mathematician and originator of Ekeland’s Variational Principle\, on 19 November 2025. The event drew a full house of faculty\, researchers\, and students for his talk titled “From the Variational Principle to the Inverse Function Theorem.” \nIn his presentation\, Prof. Ekeland demonstrated how his variational principle can be used to derive a powerful generalization of the inverse function theorem—even in settings where traditional differentiability fails. He covered both classical Banach space cases and the more intricate Nash-Moser scenario\, highlighting applications in nonlinear analysis and partial differential equations. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and member of several national academies\, Prof. Ekeland captivated the audience with his clarity\, depth\, and ability to connect abstract theory to real-world mathematical challenges. The talk was hosted by Prof. Chang Feng Gui and followed by a lively Q&A session\, reflecting strong engagement from attendees across disciplines. \nIn the future\, FST will continue its commitment to fostering high-level academic exchange through such distinguished lectures\, bridging global expertise with local scholarly communities. Students asked questions and discussed with Prof Ekeland學生們向 Ekeland教授提問並進行討論 Prof Ghang Feng GUI presented the gift to Prof Ekeland桂長峰教授向Ekeland教授贈送禮物
