SUMMARY:The ParaDiag Algorithm
DESCRIPTION:Instructors/Speakers\nProf. Shu-Lin WU\nProfessor\nSchool of Mathematics and Statistics\nNortheast Normal University\nChangchun\, Jilin\, China \nAbstract\nThe mainstream parallel-in-time (PinT) algorithms\, such as parareal and MGRiT\, cannot efficiently handle the wave propagation problems\, due to the poor convergence rate (or even divergence). New PinT algorithms are proposed in recent years and have shown promising advantages. These new PinT algorithms are called ParaDiag\, which was permitted in 2020 by the PinT scientific committee to show and popularize on the homepage of this filed (http://parallel-in-time.org/codes/paradiag.html). In this talk we will discuss some variants and introduce some basic theoretical results. \nBiography\nProf. Shulin WU obtained his Ph.D. degree in Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2010. From 2010 to 2016\, he did post-doctoral research at University of Electronic Science and Technology of China\, University Of Geneva and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His research interests are Parallel-in-Time algorithms\, waveform relaxation\, numerical analysis of DLCP/DNCP problems and numerical wave propagation. Prof. Wu Shulin works as a Professor at Northeast Normal University now\, published more than 30 papers on many international famous SCI journals of computing\, such as J. Comp. Phys.\, J. Sci. Comp.\, SIAM J. Control and Optimization. \n

SUMMARY:Sharp pointwise-in-time error estimate of L1 scheme for nonlinear subdiffusion equations
DESCRIPTION:Instructors/Speakers\nProf. Dongfang LI\nProfessor\nSchool of Mathematics and Statistics\nHuazhong University of Science and Technology\nChina \nAbstract\nAn essential feature of the subdiffusion equations with the α-order time fractional derivative is the weak singularity at the initial time. The weak regularity of the solution is usually characterized by a regularity parameter δ∈(0\,1)∪(1\,2). Under this general regularity assumption\, we present a rigorous analysis for the truncation errors and develop a new tool to obtain the stability results\, i.e.\, a refined discrete fractional-type Gronwall inequality. After that\, we obtain the pointwise-in-time error estimate of the widely used L1 scheme for nonlinear subdiffusion equations. The present results fill the gap on some interesting convergence results of L1 scheme on δ∈(0\,α)∪(α\,1)∪(1\,2]. Numerical experiments are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of our theoretical analysis. \nBiography\nProf. Dongfang LI obtained his Ph.D. degree in Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2011 and did post-doctoral research at McGill University and City University of Hong Kong. His main research interests include numerical analysis \, fractional differential equations\, etc.\nHe is a professor at the School of Mathematics and Statistics\, Huazhong University of Science and Technology\, has published more than 30 papers on many international famous SCI journals of computing\, such as J. SUMMARY:Fast convolution quadrature for the fractional operators
DESCRIPTION:Instructors/Speakers\nProf. Fanhai ZENG\nProfessor\nSchool of Mathematics\nShandong University\nChina \nAbstract\nWe develop two fast memory saving methods for calculating the fractional integral and derivative operators. \nFast Method I is based on a local approximation for the contour integral that represents the convolution weight. Fast Method II is based on a globally uniform approximation of the trapezoidal rule for the integral on the real line. Both methods are efficient\, but numerical experimentation reveals that Fast Method II outperforms Fast Method I in terms of accuracy\, efficiency\, and coding simplicity for dealing with the fractional derivative operator. Our fast method simplifies the existing one [SIAM J. Sci. Comput.\, 28 (2006)\, pp. 421–438].\n \nBiography\nProf. Fanhai ZENG received his bachelor degree from Northwestern Polytechnical University in 2005. In 2014\, he graduated from Shanghai University with a Ph.D. degree. His research interest is in computational mathematics and fractional differential equations. He works as a Professor at Shandong University.\nFrom 2014 to 2020\, he did post-doctoral research at Brown University in the United States\, Queensland University of Technology in Australia and the National University of Singapore. He co-published a monograph in 2015\, won the Shanghai Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award in 2016\, published more than 30 papers in international journals such as SINUM\, SISC\, JSC\, JCP and CMAME\, and was cited by SCIE more than 1\,000 times. \n \n

SUMMARY:Low-rank modified Douglas splitting methods for differential matrix equations
DESCRIPTION:Instructors/Speakers\nProf. Hao CHEN\nAssociate Professor\nChongqing Normal University\nChongqing\, China \nAbstract\nIn this talk\, we consider a modified Douglas splitting method for a class of differential matrix equations\, including differential Lyapunov and differential Riccati equations. The method we consider is based on a natural three-term splitting of the equations. The implementation of the algorithm requires only the solution of a linear algebraic system with multiple right-hand sides in each time step. It is proved that the method is convergent of order two and it preserves the symmetry and positive semidefiniteness of solutions of differential Lyapunov equations. Moreover\, we show how the method can be handled in a low-rank setting for large-scale computations. We also provide a theoretical a priori error analysis for the low-rank algorithms. Numerical results are presented to verify the theoretical analysis.\n \nBiography\nProf. Hao CHEN received his B.Sc. and Ph.D. from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2007 and 2012. His research interest is in “Numerical algorithms for partial differential equations\, Numerical algorithms for integro-differential equations\, numerical linear algebra\, PDE constrained optimization”. He works as an Associate Professor at Chongqing Normal University. \nProf. Chen Hao is the member of the Professional Committee of Chinese Simulation Algorithms\, Commentator of the American Mathematical Review. He has published more than 20 papers in international computational mathematics journals such as “J. Comput. Phys.”\, “J. Sci. Comput.”\, “BIT Numer. Math.”.

SUMMARY:Pointwise error estimates of the novel nonlinear fourth-order compact difference scheme for viscous Burgers’ equation
DESCRIPTION:Instructors/Speakers\nProf. Qifeng ZHANG\nAssociate Professor\nZhejiang Sci-Tech University\nChina \nAbstract\nIn this talk\, a novel fourth-order three-point compact operator for the nonlinear convection term is provided. The operator makes the numerical analysis of higher order nonlinear or linearly implicit difference schemes become possible for a wide class of nonlinear evolutionary equations under the unified framework. We take the classical viscous Burgers’equation as an example and establish a new conservative fourth-order implicit compact difference scheme based on the method of order reduction. A detailed theoretical analysis is carried out. Furthermore\, we derive a three-level linearized compact difference scheme for viscous Burgers’equation based on the proposed operator. Applying the compact operator to other more complex and higher-order nonlinear evolutionary equations is feasible\, including Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers’equation\, Korteweg-de Vries equation\, Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation\, and classification to name a few. Numerical results confirm our results.\n \nBiography\nProf. Qifeng ZHANG obtained his Ph.D. degree in Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2014\, works as an associate professor at Zhejiang Sci-Tech University. His main research interests include high-order numerical methods for delay PDEs and fractional PDEs\, numerical solution for nonlinear evolutionary equations\, preconditioning techniques and iterative methods for PDEs\, etc. He has presided over one project of National Natural Science Foundation of China and two projects of Zhejiang Provincial Natural Science Foundation \, published more than 20 papers on many international famous journals.

SUMMARY:Wilks’ Theorems in Some Random Graph Models
DESCRIPTION:Instructors/Speakers\nProf. Ting YAN\nProfessor\nHuazhong Normal University\nChina \nAbstract\nIn this talk\, we will show Wilks’ theorems in two random graph models—the beta model and the Bradley-Terry model. For fixed dimensional parameter testing problems\, we show that minus twice log-likelihood ratio statistics in the null converge to the Chi-square distribution although the number of nuisance parameters goes to infinity. For increasing dimensional parameter testing problem\, we reveal high dimensional Wilks phenomenon.\n \nBiography\nProf. Ting YAN obtained his Ph.D. degree in University of Science and Technology of China in 2012\, works as a full professor at Huazhong Normal University. SUMMARY:Teissier problem for nef classes
DESCRIPTION:Instructors/Speakers\nProf. Yashan Zhang\nAssociate Professor\nHunan University\nChina \nAbstract\nTeissier problem aims to characterize the equality case of Khovanskii-Teissier type inequality for (1\,1)-classes on a compact Kaehler manifold. When each of the involved (1\,1)-classes is assumed to be nef and big\, this problem has been solved by the previous works of Boucksom-Favre-Jonsson\, Fu-Xiao and Li. In this talk\, we shall introduce our recent work which settles the case that the involved (1\,1)-classes are just assumed to be nef. By constructing examples\, it is shown that our results are optimal.\n \nBiography\nProf. Yashan Zhang obtained his Ph.D. degree in University of Macau in 2017\, works as an associate professor at Hunan University\, Changsha. SUMMARY:Microbial Reductive dehalogenation and its bioremediation application
DESCRIPTION:Instructors/Speakers\nProf. Shanquan WANG\nProfessor\nSchool of Environmental Science and Engineering\nSun Yat-sen University\nChina \nAbstract\nOrganohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB) mediated microbial reductive dehalogenation represent a promising strategy to remove organohalide pollutants from contaminated environments. Nonetheless\, its application has been largely hindered by the difficulties in obtaining enriched OHRB\, biostimulating materials and niches control. In this seminar\, I will share our research progress in overcoming these difficulties and in applying the newly developed materials and strategies in bioremediation of a chloroethenes-contaminated site.\n \nBiography\n \nDr. Shanquan WANG is a Professor in the School of Environmental Science and Engineering\, Sun Yat-sen University\, China. He received his Bachelor degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Science and Technology Beijing in 2004 and M.Eng Degree from the Beijing Normal University in 2007. He obtained his Doctor Degree from the National University of Singapore in 2012. His research focus on functional anaerobic microorganisms and their conversion of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). His lab integrates microbial cultivation\, metagenomics\, molecular techniques and bioreactor operation to gain fundamental insights into complex biosystems (e.g.\, bioremediation sites\, anaerobic digesters and wastewater treatment bioreactors) at specifically from molecular-\, cellular-\, community- to system-levels. The generated knowledge on these reductive bioprocesses will be further employed to devise novel methods\, techniques and products for the environmental engineering purposes.

SUMMARY:Progress and future expectation of regional oceanography research in South China Sea
DESCRIPTION:Instructors/Speakers\nProf. Dongxiao WANG\nDean and Professor\nSchool of Marine Sciences\nSun Yat-sen University\nChina \nAbstract\nSouth China Sea (SCS) is one of the crucial oceanic channels connecting Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean. It develops a complicated circulation\, and heat and salt variability of SCS could have significant influences on regional climate. This topic will introduce (1) Interannual variation of circulation in the SCS. The intensity of eastward and northward branch of the summer SCS Western Boundary Current (WBC) along the coast of Vietnam showed negative correlation on interannual scale. This variation is mainly affected by the SCS Summer Monsoon and the flux of Luzon Strait. (2) Subsurface layer warming event in the SCS. Extreme warming events had happened many times in subsurface layer\, SCSWBC plays a decisive role in generating and maintaining those extreme warming events. (3) Long-term trend of subsurface salinity in the SCS. Subsurface salinity in the northern SCS had a significant low-frequency variability during the past few decades: it decreased in the 1960s\, then turned to increase from 1975\, and decreased again after 1993. This decadal variation is determined by the combined effects of seawater intrusion through Luzon Strait and regional deep seawater upwelling process. \nFuture progresses may extend in fields below: (1) Mechanism of multi-scale (especially the mesoscale and submesoscale) interaction of the SCS main current system and its influence on the variation of main current system. (2) Mechanism of the SCS deep circulation variability and its relationship with energy in the upper and middle circulation. (3) Pattern and variability of the SCS middle circulation and its dynamical relationship with the upper and middle circulation. \nBiography\n \nProfessor Dongxiao Wang is the dean of School of Marine Sciences in Sun Yat-sen University. He is also the deputy director of air-sea interaction committee\, Chinese Society for Oceanography\, the committee members of CNC-WCRP\, SIMSEA\, and CLIVAR/IOC‐GOOS (2017-2021). His interest is in the research of tropical ocean circulation dynamics and air-sea interaction. He got awards of National natural sciences award of China (the 2nd) (First Author). He is the chief scientist for National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program)\, National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars\, and so on. He has published more than 300 papers\, and two books named Climatological atlas of physical oceanography in the upper South China Sea\, Ocean circulation variation and air-sea interaction in the tropical Pacific Ocean.

SUMMARY:The deformation and thermal effect of mesoscale eddy in South China Sea
DESCRIPTION:Instructors/Speakers\nProf. Chunhua QIU\nAssociate Professor\nSchool of Marine Sciences\nSun Yat-sen University\nChina \nAbstract\nMesoscale eddies with spatial resolution of 50-300 km and temporal scales of several weeks carry more than 80% of global ocean kinetic energy，therefore\, they are very important in ocean modeling. South China Sea is fulfilled with mesoscale eddies. We reviewed the observation skills of mesoscale eddies first. Then the deformation of mesoscale eddy was investigated by using observational network. We defined a vortex-deformation index to forecast the deformation trend of mesoscale eddy\, and found the baroclinic instability is the main mechanism of eddy deformation. By using MITgcm model\, we found the eddy advection induced an extreme surface cooling after Tropical cyclone “Bailu”. \n \nBiography\n \nChunhua Qiu is an Associate Professor in School of Marine Sciences\, Sun Yat-sen University. Her interest is in observing and modeling mesoscale-small scale dynamic processes in South China Sea. Her research is mainly supported by the project of National Natural Science Foundation of China\, The National High Technology Research and Development Program of China\, and so on. She publishes more than 30 papers and 1 book of Marine Meteorology. She is the reviewer of Journal of Geophysical Research-Oceans\, Frontiers in Marine Science\, International Journal of Climate\, and so on.

SUMMARY:Smart Medicine: Medical Big Data / AI with Innovative Applications in Patient Monitoring\, Disease Diagnosis\, Prediction and Health ManagementSpeaker: Prof. Yanchun ZHANG from Guangzhou University
DESCRIPTION:Instructors/Speakers\nProf. Yanchun ZHANG\nGuangzhou University\, China\nNew York Department of Pencheng Laboratory\, China \nAbstract\nDue to the recent development or maturation of database\, data storage\, data capturing\, and sensor technologies\, huge medical and health data have been generated at hospitals and medical organizations at unprecedented speed. Those data are a very valuable resource for improving health delivery\, health care and decision making and better risk analysis and diagnosis. Health care and medical service is now becoming more data-intensive and evidence-based since electronic health records are used to track individuals’ and communities’ health information (particularly changes). These substantially motivate and advance the emergence and the progress of data-centric health data and knowledge management research and practice. \nIn this talk\, we will introduce several innovative data mining techniques and case studies to address the challenges encountered in e-health and medical big data. This includes techniques and development on medical data streams\, correlation analysis\, abnormally detection and risk predictions with patient monitoring and aging care applications. \nBiography\nProf. Yanchun Zhang\, Guangzhou University & Chief Scientist\, Pengcheng Laboratory\, China \nYanchun Zhang is currently Professor at Guangzhou University and Chief Scientist at New Network Department of Pengcheng Laboratory\, China. He is also Emeritus Professor at Victoria University. \nDr Zhang obtained a PhD degree in Computer Science from The University of Queensland in 1991.
