SUMMARY:IOTSC Talk Series: The Effects of Wave‐current Interactions on Coastal Circulation ModellingSpeaker: Prof. Xiao Hua WANG from The University of New South Wales
DESCRIPTION:The Effects of Wave-current Interactions on Coastal Circulation Modelling\nSpeaker: Prof. Xiao Hua WANG\, Professor\, The Sino-Australian Research Consortium for Coastal Management\, School of Science\, The University of New South Wales\nDate: 02/12/2022 (Friday)\nTime: 11:00 – 12:00\nLanguage: English\nVenue: N21-5/F Exhibition Hall (N21-5007) \nAbstract:\nUnderstanding the wave-current interactions (WCI) is crucial to accurate modelling of wave\, tides and storm surge in the coastal oceans. In this talk\, I will use case studies to show WCI can greatly modify sea level and wave height via tide-induced water level changes and current advection/refraction of wave energy. More specifically\, model results show that WCI affects wave set-up in the surf zone due to a balance between cross-shore pressure gradient and wave radiations stress gradient. Furthermore\, the water level is the dominant factor in significant wave height modulation when the wave propagates into shallower regions from the deeper ocean\, whereas the current modulates the deep ocean wave height. Wave energy dissipation related to whitecapping processes plays a greater role in reducing the wave height nearshore than the dissipation due to depth-induced breaking and bottom friction. \nSpeaker’s Bio:\nProfessor Xiao Hua WANG is the Co-leader of the Sino-Australian Research Consortium for Coastal Management (SARCCM)\, University of New South Wales (UNSW)\, Australia\, and an associate editor for Estuarine\, Coastal and Shelf Science and Limnology and Oceanography: Methods\, respectively. His research concerns observing (including satellite remote sensing) and modelling of coastal oceans\, sediment transport dynamics\, and understanding of coastal management issues impacted by anthropogenic drivers and climate change. Google Scholar consistently ranks him in top 15 researchers in ‘coastal oceanography’\, ‘sediment dynamics’ and ‘coastal management’. \nFor enquiries: Tel: 8822 8183 or 8822 9141\nEmail: jingyang@um.edu.mo or shirleyfong@um.edu.mo

SUMMARY:Seminar - Engineering the Heat and Mass Transfer in Hydrogels for Thermal Management and Thermal Utilizations
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nHydrogels are formed through the cross-linking of hydrophilic polymer chains within large amounts of water. The water-rich nature resembles extracellular matrices and makes them a natural choice for tissue engineering and biomedicine. In recent years\, ascribed to the fast growing of wearable and implantable devices\, hydrogel gradually emerges as an important material platform for designing soft electronics\, artificial skin\, actuators and on-body electricity generators. Also\, due to the unique water state inside\, hydrogels are taking a growing role in energy applications. In this talk\, I will introduce the recent works from our group to engineer the heat and mass transfer in hydrogels for ionic conductor\, ionic modulation\, vapor pressure control and optical regulation. The applications include sensor design\, microfluidic chip\, battery\, heat dissipation and energy saving buildings. \nBiography \nDr. Kang Liu received his Bachelor’s degree (2009) and his Ph.D. (2014) in Thermal Engineering from Wuhan University\, China. After obtaining his Ph.D.\, he worked in Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (WNLO)\, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) as a research scientist. During 2017–2018\, he was a visiting professor in Stanford University. He joined in the School of Power and Mechanical Engineering\, Wuhan University as a professor from the end of 2018. His main research interest is advanced thermo-fluidics for energy applications. He has published a series of peer-reviewed articles in well-recognized journals\, including Nature Communications\, Energy & Environment Science\, Advanced Materials\, Nano Letters\, and ACS Nano\, with a total citation of 3000+ and an H-index of 26.

SUMMARY:Electric Manipulation and Readout of Spintronic Materials
DESCRIPTION:Instructors/Speakers\nProf. Rui WU\n \nProfessor\, \nSpin-X Institute\, South China University of Technology \n  \nAbstract \nElectric manipulation of magnetism is expected to reduce the size and power consumption of spintronic devices. However\, the current material systems in which magnetic properties can be controlled electrically often suffer from drawbacks such as high operation voltage\, small magnetoelectric coefficient\, and obvious leakage current (especially in the 3-1 magnetoelectric composite system). In this talk\, I will introduce our latest results on 3-1 type magnetoelectric nanocomposite films. Through material and structural design\, we have successfully solved the leakage problem of 3-1 magnetoelectric systems\, realized the obvious converse magnetoelectric effect (i.e. electric control of magnetism) and self-biased converse magnetoelectric effects at room temperature\, which is of great significance for the device applications. In addition\, the two-dimensional/van der Waals magnets that emerged in the past five years are expected to overcome Moore’s law limit in spintronic devices\, and this report will also introduce our latest progress in the electric readout of magnetism in the van der Waals antiferromagnet. \n  \nBiography \nDr. Rui Wu is a full professor (PI) at the Spin-X Institute\, South China University of Technology. In 2015\, he obtained his PhD in condensed matter physics from Peking University\, and then has been engaged in postdoctoral research at the University of Cambridge\, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology\, and the University of Mainz. He was an associate research scientist at the Beijing Academy of Quantum Information Sciences in 2021. He is mainly engaged in the research of low-dimensional spintronic materials and devices closely related to next-generation information storage and computing technology. He has published 46 papers in journals including Nature Electron.\, Advanced Functional Materials.\, ACS Appl. Mater. & Interfaces\, Phys. Rev. Appl.\, Phys Rev. B\, etc. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Seminar - Pushing the Rheological and Mechanical Boundaries of 3D Bioprinting for Tissue Engineering
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \n3D Bioprinting has opened a new avenue for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine\, with the ability to directly manipulate living cells. Despite the considerable progress in the last decade\, 3D bioprinting has long been subjected to trade-offs between physicochemical and biological outcomes. The resulting material properties of the initial bioinks\, which are typically cell-laden formulations\, and final printing products usually lie within a moderate range\, which limits the application of bioprinting and its products. Recent progress in bioinks and bioprinting techniques has significantly expanded the window of material properties. In this talk\, I will define two bioprinting windows to clarify the trade-offs between physical chemistry and biology. I will illustrate it with examples from our team and others that have pushed the rheological boundaries of bioinks and mechanical boundaries of bioprints\, focusing on unusual material properties. \nBiography \nDr. Ouyang is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Tsinghua University. He obtained a Ph.D. degree in Materials Science and Engineering at Tsinghua University (2017)\, postdoctoral training in Materials and Bioengineering at Imperial College London (2017-2020)\, and a visiting research training in Bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania (2015-2016). His research interests include the design\, fabrication\, and application of complex biomaterial and cellular systems\, with a central focus on the development of 3D bioprinting and advanced biofabrication technologies for engineering in vitro living systems. He has published a series of peer-reviewed articles in well-recognized journals\, including Science Advances\, Advanced Materials\, Materials Today\, and Trends in Biotechnology\, with a total citation of 2500+ and an H-index of 16. He is currently an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Bioprinting\, Youth Editorial Board Member of BMEMat\, Guest Editor of Biomaterials Advances\, and Early Career Researcher Committee Member of ISBF. He has been recognized with a series of awards\, including the ISBF New Investigator Award (2021)\, IOP Top Cited Author Award (2018)\, Distinguished Doctorate of Tsinghua University (2017)\, and GE Foundation TECH Award First Place (2016).

SUMMARY:Seminar - Porous piezoelectric ceramics for sensing and energy harvesting
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nA novel lead-free flexible piezoelectric energy harvester structure based on porous BCZT pillars and PDMS was achieved. Compared with 0–3 type piezoelectric composites\, where the piezoelectric phase is isolated within the material\, flexible piezoelectric energy harvesters based on a three-dimensional interconnected ceramic skeleton are of particular interest due to their high stress transfer capability and high piezoelectric coefficients. Herein\, a novel lead-free flexible piezoelectric energy harvester structure based on porous BCZT pillars and PDMS was developed. The effect of porosity on piezoelectric coefficients\, ferroelectric properties and energy harvesting performance is investigated in detail. The aligned BCZT-PDMS composite shows great potential in piezoelectric energy harvesting due to excellent piezoelectric properties and stress transfer capability compared with 0–3 type composites. The piezoelectric coefficient and energy harvesting figure of merit are significantly enhanced due to the presence of an aligned pore structure which leads to a high transfer of applied stress into the piezoelectric phase. The highly aligned porosity leads to the creation of a piezoelectric composite exhibits a high output voltage and current. This work therefore expands the applications of porous piezoelectric materials and provides a new strategy for the manufacture of flexible piezoelectric energy harvesters. \nBiography \nYan Zhang is now a professor at Central South University and the Associate Head of State Key Laboratory of Powder Metallurgy\, with research interests including piezoelectric\, pyroelectric and ferroelectric materials\, and their applications in piezo-electrocatalysis\, energy harvesting\, and sensing. She obtained her BSc and PhD degrees in Materials Science from Central South University in 2008 and 2013\, respectively. She worked at Hunan University from 2014 to 2016. Her PhD work concentrated on the fine adjustment of aligned porous structures and lead-free porous piezoelectric composites for biomedical application. She was a Marie-Skłodowska-Curie Fellow in Mechanical Engineering at University of Bath\, working on porous materials\, ferroelectrics\, and their composites in 2016 to 2019. She has been awarded the Humboldt Research Fellowship for experienced researchers since 2021. She is now a professor at Central South University\, with research interests including piezoelectric\, pyroelectric and ferroelectric materials and their applications in electrocatalysis\, energy harvesting\, and sensing.
