SUMMARY:Seminar - Self-powered sensing systems for smart sensing and human-machine interfaces
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nAs a new type of electromechanical energy conversion device\, triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is expected to achieve efficient collection and reliable sensing of ubiquitous low-frequency mechanical energy in the environment\, and has huge applications in distributed sensing and energy supply fields such as the Internet of things (IoT) and human-machine interaction (HMI). In this talk\, I will report the latest research progress of our research group on TENG-based self-powered sensing systems\, tactile perception and HMIs. \nBiography \nProf. Wenbo Ding is now an associate professor and leading the smart sensing and robotics (SSR) group in Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI)\, Tsinghua University. He received the B.E and Ph.D. degrees (both with the highest honors) from the Department of Electronic Engineering\, Tsinghua University\, Beijing\, China\, in 2011 and 2016\, respectively\, and then worked as a postdoctoral research fellow in Materials Science and Engineering at Georgia Tech\, Atlanta\, GA\, under the supervision of Professor Z. L. Wang from 2016 to 2019. He has published over 70 journal and conference papers and received many prestigious awards\, including the National Early-Career Award\, the IEEE Scott Helt Memorial Award for the best paper published in IEEE Transactions on Broadcasting\, the 2019 and 2022 Natural Science Award (Second Prize) from Institute of Electronics\, the Gold Medal and Special Prize at the 47th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva. His research interests are diverse and interdisciplinary\, which include self-powered sensors\, energy harvesting\, wearable devices for health and soft robotics with the help of signal processing\, machine learning and mobile computing.

Loring professor of electrical and computer engineering. He also directs the Center for Energy and the Global Environment. He is a Life Fellow of the IEEE and an IEEE Millennium Medal winner. He is the 2023 IEEE President and CEO and was the president of the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) for 2018 and 2019. He is the founding editor-in-chief of the IEEE Electrification Magazine and the IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy. He has published over 150 journal papers and has made over 500 conference and invited presentations. He is the founder of BEM Controls\, LLC\, a Virginia (USA)-based software company providing building energy management solutions. He has conducted several energy efficiency\, renewable energy\, blockchain and sensor integration projects for Duke Energy\, Tokyo Electric Power Company\, the US National Science Foundation\, the US Department of Defense\, the US Department of Energy and the State of Virginia. DESCRIPTION:Introduction \nWith the full support from the University of Macau Development Foundation (UMDF)\, the University of Macau has established the UMDF Named Professorships and the UMDF Professorial Fellowships as significant honours to outstanding scholars in various disciplines. The UMDF Professorial Fellowship Lecture is a new series under the well-received University Lecture Series. By inviting different professorial fellows to give academic lectures\, we hope that academic exchange and interaction will be strengthened\, making UM a better place to learn and study. \nWe are honored to have invited Prof. Changfeng GUI to speak at the upcoming lecture. Prof. Gui is the University of Macau Development Foundation Professorial Fellow of Mathematics\, Chair Professor and Head of Department of Mathematics\, FST\, UM.
