The event drew a full house of faculty\, researchers\, and students for his talk titled “From the Variational Principle to the Inverse Function Theorem.” \nIn his presentation\, Prof. Ekeland demonstrated how his variational principle can be used to derive a powerful generalization of the inverse function theorem—even in settings where traditional differentiability fails. He covered both classical Banach space cases and the more intricate Nash-Moser scenario\, highlighting applications in nonlinear analysis and partial differential equations. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and member of several national academies\, Prof. Ekeland captivated the audience with his clarity\, depth\, and ability to connect abstract theory to real-world mathematical challenges. DESCRIPTION:IntroductionDistinguished Scholar ForumBookletIntroduction\nDr. Stanley Ho Medical Development Foundation (SHMDF)\, founded in January 2005\, is a non-profit juridical person which has been declared of public administrative utility\, registered at the Identification Department of the Government of the Macau Special Administrative Region. Donations to the Foundation are deductible from the donor’s income up to 2% of the gross revenue generated by sales/services. \nMission \nThe aim of the Foundation is to promote\, develop and finance socially beneficial\, educational\, academic\, economical\, charitable\, cultural\, recreational\, athletic\, scientific and technological research activities\, whereby the knowledge level and quality of the above activities may be enhanced ─ especially those activities relating to improving the quality of medical service in Macau and other regions in China and financing the training of medical practitioners and workers in the techniques and technologies in their areas of expertise. \nEstablishment of the grant \nTo celebrate the 40th anniversary of the University of Macau (UM)\, the Foundation established a designated fund titled “Set Sail for New Horizons\, Create the Future” Grant which was first opened for applications in 2021\, granting MOP 1 million per year for 10 years. The allocated funding is to support the nurturing of talents in the areas of health sciences and big data healthcare applications\, and to support young scholars to venture into innovation and breakthroughs in their research areas. \nDistinguished Scholar Forum\nAll in all\, the “Set Sail for New Horizons\, Create the Future” projects have achieved remarkable progress and significant results in terms of research promotion\, academic exchange and talent nurturance. DESCRIPTION:Talk Review 活動回顧\nThe Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Macau hosted a distinguished Talk by Prof. Fanghua Lin\, a world-renowned mathematician and member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. In his lecture\, Prof. Lin revisited the classical yet deeply challenging topic of extreme problems associated with Dirichlet eigenvalues of the Laplacian. \nThe talk began with an introduction to Weyl’s asymptotic formula\, which describes the qualitative behavior of large eigenvalues on bounded domains in Euclidean space. Prof. Lin skillfully bridged classical results with contemporary research\, highlighting recent advances in obtaining more quantitative estimates. He discussed the well-known Polya’s conjecture and explored several natural variational and extreme problems related to eigenvalues\, offering insight into both theoretical and applied implications. Prof. Lin’s presentation was both rigorous and accessible\, striking a balance between deep mathematical detail and intuitive explanation. He engaged the audience with clear examples and historical context\, making complex topics such as spectral geometry and PDE theory approachable for graduate students and faculty alike.
