SUMMARY:FST Distinguished Talk – Recent Progress on Hamilton–Ivey-Type Curvature Pinching for Ricci SolitonsSpeaker: Dr. Huai-Dong CAO from Lehigh UniversityHosted by: Prof. Chang Feng GUI
Huai-Dong Cao delivered a compelling seminar at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Macau on 8 January 2026\, titled “Recent Progress on Hamilton-Ivey-Type Curvature Pinching for Ricci Solitons.” He began with a clear overview of the classical Hamilton-Ivey estimate—central to 3D Ricci flow—which asserts that positive curvature dominates negative curvature near singularities\, ensuring non-negative sectional curvature in blow-up limits like steady or shrinking solitons. \nHe then presented recent joint work with Junming Xie\, extending these pinching estimates to higher dimensions and\, notably\, to asymptotically conical expanding solitons. These advances deepen our understanding of singularity formation and long-time behavior in Ricci flow and offer new tools for classifying soliton geometries. \nDr. Cao’s seminar balanced technical precision with intuitive insight\, engaging an audience of students\, postdocs\, and faculty. The lively Q&A touched on applications to other flows and links to major results like the Poincaré conjecture. His distinguished background—Ph.D. under Shing-Tung Yau\, faculty positions at top institutions\, and prestigious fellowships—underscored his authority in geometric analysis. \nDr.

SUMMARY:FST MO-HQ Distinguished Talk Series - Dynamic Real-Time Optimization over Infinite HorizonsSpeaker: Prof. Lorenz T BIEGLER from Carnegie Mellon UniversityHosted by: Prof. Feng WAN
DESCRIPTION:Talk Review 活動回顧\nThe Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Macau hosted Prof. Lorenz T. Biegler\, U.S. National Academy of Engineering member and Carnegie Mellon professor\, for a seminar on “Dynamic Real-Time Optimization over Infinite Horizons” on 9 January. \nProf. Biegler presented a breakthrough in Economic Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (eNMPC)\, enabling real-time optimization of industrial processes over an infinite time horizon. Traditional eNMPC uses finite horizons with artificial constraints that compromise long-term economic performance. His new method applies a time-transformation technique to convert the infinite problem into a solvable finite form—retaining stability while maximizing true operational objectives. \nThe approach has been successfully tested on chemical reactors\, power systems\, and energy storage\, delivering smoother control\, higher efficiency\, and reduced wear. It aligns control actions with actual economic goals rather than short-term proxies. \nThe talk\, part of the FST MO-HQ Distinguished Seminar Series and hosted by Prof. Feng Wan\, drew strong interest from faculty and students in engineering and applied sciences. Attendees praised its blend of theoretical innovation and industrial relevance. \nA leading figure in process systems engineering\, Prof. Biegler is a Fellow of AIChE\, IFAC\, and SIAM\, with over 600 publications. His work continues to shape how industries implement intelligent\, sustainable automation. This infinite-horizon framework represents a major step toward smarter\, more economically optimal control systems—offering significant potential for green manufacturing and resilient energy infrastructure. \nProf Wan Feng introduced Prof Biegler Prof. Lorenz T. SUMMARY:FST Distinguished Talk – Foam Concrete for Energy Absorbing ApplicationsSpeaker: Prof. David A. Lange from University of Illinois Urbana-ChampaignHosted by: Prof. Wanhuan ZHOU
DESCRIPTION:Talk Review 活動回顧\nThe Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Macau hosted a distinguished lecture titled “Research on Foamed Concrete for Energy-Absorbing Applications\,”on  January 26\, 2026\,  featuring Professor David A. Lange\, Emeritus Professor from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign\, as the keynote speaker. Drawing upon his profound expertise\, Professor Lange offered an insightful analysis of foamed concrete’s vast potential as a next-generation lightweight construction material\, particularly highlighting its exceptional promise in critical safety applications such as aircraft arresting systems at airport runway overrun zones. He meticulously explained how X-ray computed tomography enables precise characterization of the foam’s microstructure\, and how this is integrated with advanced computational models to simulate its mechanical behavior under compression—thereby uncovering the complex response mechanisms under dynamic loading. Moreover\, Professor Lange underscored the strategic incorporation of recycled fine-particle waste into the manufacturing process\, which not only promotes efficient resource recycling but also paves the way for greener\, more sustainable construction practices. \nThe seminar drew participation from 80 academics\, faculty members\, and students\, fostering a vibrant atmosphere with lively discussions and active engagement. Throughout the lecture\, cutting-edge research in cementitious composites was presented with remarkable clarity and rigor\, offering invaluable inspiration and clear direction for the future innovation of smart\, eco-friendly building materials.
