More than 20 faculty members and postgraduate students from the Department of Mathematics, University of Macau (UM), attended the Sixth International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians in Taiwan on 14 to 19 July. Several faculty members and postgraduate students gave presentations at the conference, and had discussions with Prof. Shing-Tung Yau, a world-renowned mathematician and co-founder of the conference..

The International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians is a triennial event that aims to provide a platform for Chinese mathematicians from around the world to exchange ideas on the latest research developments in pure and applied maths through presentations and discussions. The first conference was held in 1998 in Beijing. Other cities that have hosted the conference include Hong Kong and Hangzhou. This year’s conference, which attracted more than 1,000 Chinese mathematicians from around the world, featured nearly close to 200 talks covering a wide range of areas, including number theory, algebra, analysis, geometry, differential equations, probability and statistics, scientific computing, and bio-mathematics.

Prof. Jin Xiaoqing, head of the Department of Mathematics; Prof. Cheng Che Man, Prof. Ding Deng, Prof. Sun Haiwei, Prof. Tam Sik Chung, Prof. Vong Seak Weng, Dr. Kou Kit Ian, Dr. Lei Siu Long, Dr. Hu Guanghui, as well as a dozen postgraduate students from UM attended the conference. Several faculty members and students gave presentations, including Prof. Jin Xiaoqing’s presentation titled “Preconditioned Iterative Methods for Fractional Diffusion Equation” and Dr. Kou Kit-Ian’s presentation titled “On Uncertainty Principle for Quaternionic Linear Canonical Transform”, which were highly praised by participants of the conference.

Prof. Shing-Tung Yau, a world-renowned mathematician and co-founder of the conference, praised the research efforts and achievements of UM’s Department of Mathematics and asked about the latest developments of UM faculty members and students on the work and study fronts. He also encouraged UM’sthe Department of Mathematics to continue to work hard towards greater achievements.

UM representatives said that the conference provided an excellent platform for them to showcase UM’s research achievements in maths to mathematicians from around the world. They also felt that the conference increased the department’s influence in the communities of Chinese mathematicians and played a positive role in promoting maths development in Macao.
