An Algorithm for Melnikov Functions and Application to a Chaotic Rotor

Abstract

This talk is concerning a chaotic oscillation of a nonlinear model of turbine rotor. Melnikov’s method is one of the most important methods in determining chaos, but the practical model prevents the application of Melnikov’s method because its complicated nonlinearity makes difficulties to count the number of equilibria, not mentioning the determination of stability and the computation of heteroclinic orbits. In this work, a numerical algorithm is given to compute Melnikov functions with an idea of avoiding the computation of heteroclinic orbits. The convergence of the algorithm and the estimates of errors help us to give a parameter region for chaotic oscillation of the rotor.

Biography

Prof. weinian Zhang obtained his Ph.D degree in Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems from Peking University in 1990. Currently Prof. Zhang is a Second Class Professor of Sichuan university. Prof. Zhang’s interests includes Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems, Difference Equations and Functional Equations. He has published more than 80 research papers in SCI Journals, which includes such as Mathematische Annalen etc. top journals. Prof. Zhang’s research has been funded through a series of National Science Foundation grants of China. In 2008, Prof. Zhang obtained the China National Outstanding Youth Grant. Besides this, Prof. Zhang also received the China Youth Science Award in 1994 and China Universities Youth Teacher Award in 2002.
