Understanding Peakons, Periodic Peakons and Compactons via a Shallow Water Wave Equation

In this talk, a shallow water wave model is used to introduce the concepts of peakon, periodic peakon and compacton. Traveling wave solutions of the shallow water equation are presented. The corresponding traveling wave system is a singular planar dynamical system with one singular straight line. By using the method of dynamical systems, bifurcation diagrams and explicit exact parametric representations of the solutions are given, including solitary wave solution, periodic wave solution, peakon solution, periodic peakon solution and compacton solution under different parameter conditions.


Prof. Jibin Li is a chair professor and Director of the Center for Dynamical systems and Nonlinear Science Studies at Zhejiang Normal University from 2004 to now. Prof. Li’s research interests includes Dynamical Systems, Differential Equations, Chaos and Solitons, Functional Differential Equations. He has published more than 190 research papers in prestigious Journals. His research has been funded through a series of National Science Foundation grants of China. Prof. Li also has published more than 7 books by Science Press in Beijing. In 1997, Prof. Li received an honor of the expert with outstanding contributions to the nation in China. In 2001, he was awarded the second prize of the distinguished contributions to the national education. Prof. Li was also awarded the first prize for the Advance in Science and Technology from Yunnan Province in 2003, and the first prize for Advance in Science and Technology from Zhejiang province in 2001, respectively.
