A Background Introduction to Empirical Mode Decomposition

Empirical Mode Decomposition is a new and effective tool to analyze the nonlinear and non-stationary signals. With this decompostion, a complicated signal can be decomposed into a sum of finite Intrinsic Mode Functions whose instantaneous frequencies computed by the Analytic Signal method give a physically meaningful characterization of the signal. This talk will give a brief and intuitive introduction to the background of this method, including the Signal transmission and modulation, Demodulation and analytic signals, Intrinsic mode functions, Empirical mode decomposition, Questions and applications.
