This presentation discusses the opportunities and challenges for the development of Smart Grid, highlights the smart grid related researches and developments. The presentation concludes with the listing of issues needed to be addressed to ensure successful integration procedures that will eventually create new structures of efficient, modular and environmentally responsive electricity infrastructure that will have an impact nationally as well as globally.


Prof. Vladimiro Miranda holds a Ph.D. degree (1982) from FEUP, the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, Portugal.

He has been a lecturer at FEUP since 1980, holding presently the position of Full Professor in the area of Power Systems. Previously, he had been Professor in the University of Macau, China (1996 and 1997).

Since 2000 he has been serving as a Member of the Board of Directors of INESC Porto – which is now the coordinating entity of INESC TEC – INESC Technology and Science.

Prof. Miranda is presently the President of INESC P&D Brazil. He was previously the President of the Board of Directors of INESC Macau, China. He is presently Director at OCEANUS – Marine Research and Innovation, at the University of Porto, Portugal, invited Guest Professor at the University of Novi Sad, Republic of Serbia and Academic Advisor of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

He has been serving in the Administration board of companies incubated by INESC and acting as consultant for industrial companies and for companies and agencies devoted to innovation and technology.

Prof. Miranda has been serving as Project evaluator for the Foundation of Science and Technology and for the Innovation Agency in Portugal, as well as for similar governmental organizations. He is also listed as Expert for the European Commission project evaluation.

His expertise areas are in planning and operation of power systems including large scale integration of conventional and new renewable energies and in the application of a Computational Intelligence approach to models. He has authored a large number of publications in the most prestigious international journals in his area of expertise, mainly in the IEEE Transactions in Power Systems.

Prof. Miranda is recognized as an international expert in Computational Intelligence in Power Systems and for this motive he was elevated to the degree of Fellow of the IEEE (USA). He was the recipient in 2013 of the IEEE PES Rumakumar Family Renewable Energy Excellence Award.
