History of CEE

Department Adjustment and Establishment

In 1989, the Faculty of Science and Technology was officially established and launched two programmes, one of which was Civil Engineering. This marked the milestone of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Prof. Vai Pan IU is the first course director and the founder of the Civil Engineering Programme. At that time, Professor IU and a Portuguese lecturer, Dr. Jose Moita, were dedicated to developing and setting up the Civil Engineering Programme. In 1989, the first year of the programme, more than ten students were successfully enrolled. In the early days of the establishment of the programme, there were only these two full-time teachers. The subjects of the Civil Engineering major in the first two academic years were also taught by these two teachers, while other subjects such as chemistry, and mathematics were taught by other teachers from the Faculty of Science and Technology.

Since the Faculty of Science and Technology did not have any civil engineering-related laboratory in its early days, some subjects and experiments in the programme were conducted at the Macau Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LECM), and part-time teachers were hired from LECM to teach the related subjects.

Since 1991, as the first batch of students needed to study subjects in different areas of civil engineering, the teaching team of the civil engineering programme began to expand, including Prof. M.S. SUBRAHMANYAM from geotechnical engineering, Prof. Kai Meng MOK and Prof. Zhishi WANG from hydraulic and environmental engineering and several teachers in the construction management direction.

From 1991 to 1999, the programme directors of the civil engineering programme were Prof. Vai Pan IU (1990-1994) and Prof. M.S. SUBRAHMANYAM (1994-2003). Under their leadership, the Civil Engineering Course has achieved stable enrollment, and continued to establish civil engineering-related laboratories to create conditions and lay the foundation for civil engineering research.

In 2002, the Civil Engineering program was upgraded to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Curriculum Setting and Reform

In 1989, the Bachelor of Science degree program in Civil Engineering was launched and it was the first batch of four-year bachelor’s degree programs in the academic reform of the University of Macau.

In 1993, the first batch of undergraduate students enrolled in the bachelor’s degree program graduated, and a master’s degree program in civil engineering was established in the same year.

On February 28, 1994, according to the government’s decree No. 15/94/M, the university began to admit doctoral students.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has trained a group of local engineers for the Macau SAR government to meet the demand for local engineers. At the same time, it has also cultivated a group of outstanding and competitive academic staff for the university itself, contributing to the training of a new generation of engineers.
