Objective

Environmental Engineering Laboratory is under the program of Civil Engineering in Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Macau. The laboratory can serve students for experimental study in 4-year Bachelor Degree Program and research activities in Final Year Projects. The laboratory can contribute its pilot study facilities and chemical analytical equipment as well as experimental technology to the environmental studies and continuing learning in the environmental professions in Macau.

Facilities

Part I - Automated and Computerized Pilot Plants

1. Automated and Computerized Activated Sludge Sewage-Treatment Pilot Plant

The activated sludge pilot plant consists of an oxidation tank, a decanter and a final chlorination tank, demonstration the traditional single-stage sewage treatment process. The oxidation and mixing of the biomass is achieved via the air supplied by a compressor. The treated liquid is sent to decantation through a restrictor. The sludge gathering at the bottom of the decanter is in the oxidation tank and the excess fluid is automatically drained. The water, on leaving the tank, is chlorinated and con veyed to a drain. Process control and data acquisition are automatically carried out by specific software and interface module, connected to a Personal Computer which allows the remote control of the following parameter: feed flow rate, recirculation flow rate, forced air flow rate. In developing the experiments, the effects of sewage treatment efficiency can be noted after varying the following parameters: suspended solid content in aerated mixture, permanence time of the feed sludge in the oxidation tan k, pH value in the oxidation tank, temperature, organic load, oxygen flow rate.

2. The Automated and Computerized Water Filtration Pilot Plant

The filtration plant mainly consists of mechanical and chemical filters in order to remove the degree of turbidity, iron and maganese, to absorb the odor and tasted, and to neutralize the acidity and to remove/reduce all the other unwanted characteris tics in the water. The water to be treated is sent to a 30-l borosilicate glass filter with different materials such as Barium Sulfide, Silica Sand, Anthracite etc. and a 30-L activated carbon filter by means of centrifugal pump which flow is controlled by a pneumatic valve. Process control and data acquisition are automatically carried out by specific software and interface module, connected to a Personal Computer which allows the remote control of the following parameter: feed flow rate, filter selecti on, filter outlet and inlet turbidity, water temperature, pressure across the filters. Hence, the pilot plant can provide the following educational program: mechanical filtration, chemical filtration, main parameters affecting filtration (e.g., shape of t he filtering particles, specific weight of the particles and filtering speed), resins for the exhaustion ion exchange and their regeneration, feed flow influence on filtration. The behavior of operational parameter of the plant can be displayed on a schem atic diagram with data updating in real time and, the best working cycle can be determined according to the obtained results.

Part II - Laboratory Equipments

1. Indoor Air Quality Monitor

Model : Q-Trak 7575-X & 982 Probe, TSI, USA

The Q-Trak IAQ Monitor is especially applicable to measurements of room temperature (T), relative humidity (RH), carbon dioxide (CO2), and carbon monoxide (CO) for purposes of IQA investigations, industrial hygiene surveys, baseline trending & screening, and tracking down emissions to their source (point source location).

2. Aerosol Monitor

Model : DustTrakTM II 8530/8532, TSI, USA

The DustTrak II Aerosol Monitor is used to measure aerosol contaminants such as dust, smoke, fumes, and mists, to determine aerosol concentrations corresponding to PM1.0, PM2.5, Respirable, or PM10 size fractions. It is suitable for clean office settings as well as harsh industrial workplaces, construction and environmental sites, and other outdoor applications.

3. UV-Vis Spectrophotometer

Model : DR 6000, Hach

UV-Vis spectrophotometer is routinely used in analytical chemistry for the quantitative determination of different analytes, such as transition metal ions, highly conjugated organic compounds, and biological macromolecules in solutions. The DR 6000 is a UV-Vis spectrophotometer with a wavelength range of 190 to 1100 nm. Over 200 pre-programmed processes can be recalled via the Stored Programs menu, serve users to handle their wide-ranging water testing needs.

4. Turbidimeter

Model : 2100N, Hach, & Model 2100Q, Hach,

Turbidimeter is a laboratory nephelometer calibrated for measuring turbidity with broad ranges from 0-0.2,0-1, 0-10, 1-100 and 0-1000 Nephelometer Turbidity Units ( NTU ).

5. Portable Meters

Conductivity Meters, pH meters, TDS, Salinity, and ORP

6. Dissolved oxygen meter, YSI 5000

The YSI 5000 bench top meter measures dissolved oxygen in laboratory applications.

7. Chemical Oxygen Demand ( COD ) Reactor

Model : Hach 45600, & Model CR25, Rocker

The COD test is widely used as a means of measuring the organic strength of domestic and industrial wastes. This test allows measurement of waste in terms of the total quantity of oxygen requirement for oxidation to carbon dioxide and water.

8. BOD Incubator & thermostat cabinet

Incubator is for incubation of water and wastewater samples in BOD tests.

9. Lab Stirrer (Jar Test)

Model : MY3000-6M, Meiyu, & Model 7790-402, The Six Paddle Lab Stirrer, Phipps and Bird

It is used in wastewater/potable water treatment laboratories to show the optimum concentration of coagulant or alkali necessary to assure accurate flocculation.

10. Settling Column for Analyzing Discrete Particles

The settling column is used to determine the terminal settling velocities of discrete particles and the total removal efficiency of the sedimentation.

The Total Organic Carbon (TOC) Analyzer is especially applicable to tests of small concentrations of organic matter down to the range of Parts-Per-Billion (PPB) and can be measured very rapidly.

19. Microscope

Model : Nova 952

Microorganism inside the water and waste water can be inspected and recorded by photographs under X 40 to X 1000 magnifications.

20. Fluorometer

Model : TD-700, Turner Design

This fluorometer is a compact fluorometer designed for discrete sample measurement of various fluorescent materials, including chlorophyll, rhodamine, fluorescein, histamine, vitamins, and other fluorescent materials.

21. Fiac Air Compressors

Fiac offer a wide range of Air Compressors, from small direct drive units, to the very latest in Rotary Screw technology with microprocessor controll.

Experiments

Experiments carried out in Bachelor Degree Program include pilot studies such as pilot-study of the activated sludge treatment, pilot-study of the filtration process; characterization of mixed liquor in the aeration tank by dissolve oxygen measurement, pH measurement, suspended solid measurement , organic loading measurement and calculation, sludge age calculation etc; characterization of sludge settlement in secondary settling tank by settling test; obtaining the optimum coagulant dosage for turbid water by Jar test; water quality measurements such as determination of biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC), nitrogen, phosphorus, turbidity, alkalinity etc.
