Prof. Xueyu Geng’s seminar, “Investigation of Mechanical Properties and Biodegradation in Eco-Friendly Material Reinforced Soil,” held at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Macau on August 18, 2025, attracted 30 students from diverse academic backgrounds, reflecting its interdisciplinary appeal. As Chair Professor at the University of Warwick, Prof. Geng presented research on bio-based materials for soil reinforcement, combining mechanical performance with environmental sustainability. Her team’s testing evaluated strength, stiffness, and biodegradation under various conditions, showing these materials offer effective short-term stabilization with controlled, eco-friendly degradation. The findings support greener infrastructure and have influenced design standards in the UK, Australia, and China. Prof. Geng’s expertise as a Chartered Engineer and professional Fellow added depth and credibility. The talk successfully bridged science and practice, inspiring students from different disciplines with its vision for sustainable geotechnical solutions. It highlighted the growing importance of eco-conscious innovation in engineering, making a strong case for the wider adoption of biodegradable materials in construction.
