The Faculty of Science and Technology hosted a distinguished lecture yesterday by Prof. Richard E. Carson, a world-renowned leader in biomedical imaging from Yale University. The talk, titled “Recent Advances in PET Neuroimaging,” drew a captivated audience of 40 students and faculty, showcasing the technologies that are redefining our understanding of the human brain.
Prof. Carson, Emeritus Director of the Yale PET Center, presented a compelling overview of his lab’s groundbreaking work. He detailed the development of novel radiopharmaceuticals that, for the first time, allow scientists to map synaptic density in living humans by targeting the SV2A protein. This breakthrough provides a powerful new tool for researching Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and other neuropsychiatric disorders.
The audience was also given a first look at pioneering efforts to image NMDA receptors, key players in learning and memory, and was treated to stunningly detailed human brain images captured by the NeuroEXPLORER, a next-generation PET scanner co-developed by Prof. Carson with industry that offers unparalleled resolution and sensitivity.
