Talk Review
The Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Macau hosted a distinguished lecture titled “Research on Foamed Concrete for Energy-Absorbing Applications,”on January 26, 2026, featuring Professor David A. Lange, Emeritus Professor from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, as the keynote speaker. Drawing upon his profound expertise, Professor Lange offered an insightful analysis of foamed concrete’s vast potential as a next-generation lightweight construction material, particularly highlighting its exceptional promise in critical safety applications such as aircraft arresting systems at airport runway overrun zones. He meticulously explained how X-ray computed tomography enables precise characterization of the foam’s microstructure, and how this is integrated with advanced computational models to simulate its mechanical behavior under compression—thereby uncovering the complex response mechanisms under dynamic loading. Moreover, Professor Lange underscored the strategic incorporation of recycled fine-particle waste into the manufacturing process, which not only promotes efficient resource recycling but also paves the way for greener, more sustainable construction practices.
The seminar drew participation from 80 academics, faculty members, and students, fostering a vibrant atmosphere with lively discussions and active engagement. Throughout the lecture, cutting-edge research in cementitious composites was presented with remarkable clarity and rigor, offering invaluable inspiration and clear direction for the future innovation of smart, eco-friendly building materials.
