Talk Review
The Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Macau on January 16, 2026 hosted an insightful distinguished seminar titled “Renewable and Sustainable Energy Technologies for Future Grids,” featuring Distinguished Professor Kashem Muttaqi from the University of Wollongong, Australia. A Fellow of IEEE, IET, and IEAust, Prof. Muttaqi is globally recognized for his pioneering work in smart grids, renewable energy integration, and power system optimization. In his seminar, he addressed critical challenges facing modern power systems as they accommodate increasing shares of renewable energy—such as uncoordinated power injections, outdated static network constraints that fail to reflect real-time conditions, and limited operational visibility. He argued that traditional infrastructure planning is no longer sufficient and must be complemented by dynamic, intelligent solutions. Key innovations he highlighted include solid-state transformers, soft open points, dynamic operating envelopes, dynamic line rating, and next-generation energy management systems. These technologies unlock latent capacity within existing networks, offering cost-effective alternatives to conventional grid upgrades.
Furthermore, microgrids and distributed energy resources are transforming local energy ecosystems by enhancing resilience, enabling consumer participation, and improving reliability. Energy storage plays a pivotal role in mitigating the intermittency of solar and wind generation, ensuring stable and secure grid operation. Prof. Muttaqi emphasized that the synergy of these advancements will form the backbone of future smart, sustainable power systems. His presentation blended rigorous theory with practical engineering insights, reflecting decades of research leadership. Held as part of the University of Macau’s 45th anniversary celebrations, the lecture drew a large audience of students, faculty, and researchers, sparking meaningful dialogue on the future of clean energy and grid modernization. The event underscored the university’s commitment to advancing knowledge in sustainable technologies and fostering global academic collaboration.
