Among the 2025 graduating class at the University of Macau, Luo Hao, a Master’s graduate from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Faculty of Science and Technology, stood out with his outstanding academic performance and innovative research projects. With an impressive GPA of 3.92, he earned both “The Best Master’s Student Award of the Department” and “The Best Master’s Student Award of the Faculty”. His success was not limited to academic achievements but also reflected his innovative spirit, research practice, and well-rounded development, perfectly embodying UM’s holistic education philosophy.
Innovation and Technological Exploration: Portable EEG Acquisition System
Luo’s academic thesis was a low-cost, portable EEG acquisition system that explores the use of domestic chips for EEG signal collection, offering an alternative to existing imported solutions. The system features an innovative design, with the minimum hardware cost per unit being only around 250 RMB. This technology has broad applications in brain-computer interfaces, meditation training, and emotion detection, demonstrating substantial research and market value. Under the guidance of Prof Wan Feng, Luo and his research team developed an emotion recognition system capable of effectively distinguishing between positive, neutral, and negative emotional states. Their published findings provided a new technical approach for mental health monitoring. This project not only aligned with his advisor’s expertise but also combined Luo’s passion for hardware development with his keen insight into societal needs.
Time Management and Independent Development
From circuit design and embedded development to upper-computer software programming, Luo led the entire R&D process. His EEG acquisition system earned first prize at the 2024 World Robot Contest Championship in the BCI Brain-Controlled Robot Competition. Reflecting on this experience, he cited time management as the greatest challenge—particularly during the competition, where his team completed prototype construction, testing, and report writing in just one month. This period remains one of the most memorable experiences of his postgraduate studies.
Beyond academics, Luo actively participated in postgraduate student affairs, serving as Head of the New Media Center and Vice supervisor General of the University of Macau Postgraduate Association. He led teams in event planning and promotional work, demonstrating exceptional organizational and leadership skills.
Flexible Curriculum and Abundant Resources
After earning his bachelor’s degree at South China University of Technology, Luo chose UM for its flexible course structure and rich research resources. The unique academic design of UM’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering allowed him to complete all coursework in his first year, dedicating the remaining time to research projects and skill development. He particularly appreciated UM’s practice-oriented teaching philosophy and advanced research facilities, which provided a solid foundation for his technical innovations. Luo has now been recruited by a leading semiconductor company in Zhuhai and plans to gain industry experience before considering further studies based on his career development.

羅皓的畢業論文是一個低成本、模塊化設計的便攜式腦電信號採集系統,探索以國產芯片實現腦電採集功能,為現有進口方案提供另一種可行的選擇。該系統採用創新設計,單套最小系統硬件成本僅250元人民幣,不僅具備模組化靈活性,在成本與自主可控性方面也展現出一定優勢。此技術可廣泛應用於腦機接口、冥想訓練、情緒檢測等前沿領域,兼具科研與市場價值。在萬峰教授的指導下,羅皓與研究團隊一同開發的情緒識別系統能有效區分積極、中性、消極三種情緒狀態,相關論文成果為心理健康監測提供了新的技術路徑。 這個項目報告不僅結合了導師的研究專長,更融合了羅皓對硬件開發的熱情與對社會需求的深刻洞察。
時間管理與自主開發
從電路硬件設計、嵌入式開發與上位機軟件開發等多個環節,羅皓主導了項目的全流程研發。 過去他曾憑藉腦電採集系統成功在2024世界機器人大賽錦標賽BCI腦控機器人大賽中奪得一等獎,回顧這段經歷,他表示這項研究最大的挑戰是時間管理,尤其是在參與比賽時,團隊僅用一個多月便完成原型搭建、測試與報告撰寫,這段經歷也成為他研究生生涯中最難忘的回憶之一。 除了在學術研究外,羅皓亦積極參與研究生會事務,曾任研究生會新媒體中心部長及監事會副監事長,帶領團隊完成多項活動策劃與宣傳工作,展現出優秀的組織協調能力與領導才華。
