Among the 2025 graduating cohort at the University of Macau (UM), Lam Cheong Ouyang, Charlie, a graduate of the Department of Mathematics at the Faculty of Science and Technology specializing in Applied Mathematics, has successfully been selected for the Dean’s Honours List due to his outstanding final year project. This recognition not only highlights his dedication and perseverance over the past four years but also affirms his research potential and innovative mindset.
English-Medium Instruction with a Balance of Theory and Practice
As a local student, Charlie was drawn to UM after visiting during high school events. He was impressed by the beautiful campus and supportive learning environment. The university’s English-medium instruction helped him improve his language skills and access international academic resources—key advantages for future studies.
He praised the Applied Mathematics program for its balance of theoretical depth and practical application. “Mathematics opens doors to fields like AI and finance,” he said. He also highlighted the strong faculty support: “The professors are experts who take time to guide us.”
Abundant Resources Supporting Growth
Reflecting on his four years at the UM, Charlie described the academic environment as peaceful yet free-spirited, with a balanced pace that allows each student to find their own rhythm. The comfortable dormitory conditions also enabled him to focus fully on his studies. The university offers rich academic resources, especially in the library and computer labs. “The library houses a vast collection of books and provides access to numerous international databases at no cost. And if personal computers aren’t powerful enough, the university has intelligent supercomputing centers available for use,” he noted. Outside of academics, Charlie actively participated in marathons organized by his residential college and volunteered in organizing academic lectures. These experiences enriched his university life and broadened his perspectives.
Research Focus: Solving Partial Differential Equations Using Neural Networks
Charlie’s final year project, titled “On Applications of Neural Networks in Numerically Solving Partial Differential Equations”, was supervised by Prof Guanghui Hu. The project explored using neural networks to solve partial differential equations more efficiently than traditional methods. Despite challenges in programming and writing, he conducted a detailed analysis and earned high praise for his innovative work.
Pursuing Further Studies Abroad and Continuing the Mathematical Journey
Looking ahead, Charlie has received offers for Master’s programmes from world-renowned institutions including the University of Oxford, Imperial College London, and the University of Chicago, and is preparing to begin his overseas academic journey.
Charlie credited his mathematical training for sharpening his critical thinking and problem-solving skills, essential for both industry and further studies. He encouraged students to explore their interests, use available resources, and engage in diverse activities to discover their passions. “University is a time for self-discovery—try new things and find what truly inspires you.” His journey reflects UM’s mission to foster independent, innovative thinkers with global perspectives, equipping him with the resilience and vision to excel in his future endeavors.

作為一名土生土長的澳門青年,歐陽林翔在中學時期曾多次因參加比賽及運動會到訪澳大,對大學優美的環境與自由開放的學習氛圍心生嚮往。更吸引他的是,澳大全英語授課的教學模式。「現今的學術世界都是以英文為主導,澳大提供了一個沉浸式的英語學習環境,讓我們更容易接觸國際前沿資料,同時也極大地提升了我的語言能力。」這種語言環境無疑為日後深造打下了堅實基礎。
此外,歐陽林翔認為應用數學專業這個科目既涵蓋理論數學,也提供應用數學的訓練,無論是未來繼續深造還是就業都有不俗的發展空間。他說:「理論方面有助於做研究,應用方面則與AI、金融等熱門行業緊密相關,而數學背景的學生在就業市場上一直具有競爭力。」他也特別讚揚數學系師資力量雄厚,老師們皆是各自領域中的佼佼者,教學嚴謹且耐心。「老師們都非常專業,願意花時間解答學生問題,這樣的學習氛圍讓我受益良多。」
學習資源充足,助力成長
回顧四年的澳大生活,歐陽林翔認為澳大學習氛圍寧靜而自由,形容整體節奏穩定,不會過於忙碌,每個人都能找到自己的學習步調。宿舍環境也非常舒適,讓他能專注學習。澳大的學習資源非常齊備,尤其是圖書館和電腦實驗室。「圖書館藏書豐富,還有許多國際數據庫可以免費使用;如果個人電腦效能不足,學校也有智能超算中心可用。」在課餘活動方面,他積極參與書院組織的馬拉松活動,也曾擔任志願者協助籌辦講座。
以神經網絡解偏微分為研究方向
歐陽林翔的畢業設計題目為《On applications of neural network in numerically solving partial differential equations》,指導老師為胡光輝教授。該項目探討如何運用人工神經網絡來解決傳統數值方法在成本與效率方面的限制,具有高度的創新性和應用潛力。他解釋道,目前已有三種主流方法被應用於此方向,他嘗試將其應用於非線性設定的方程求解,並進行了深入分析與比較。雖然過程中遇到不少困難,例如編程實現與論文寫作,但他堅持不懈,最終順利完成整個項目,並獲得評審一致好評。
遠赴海外深造,延續數學之路
面對未來,歐陽林翔已收到牛津大學、帝國理工學院及芝加哥大學等世界頂尖學府的碩士錄取通知,正準備赴海外深造。他坦言,數學訓練培養了他嚴謹的思維能力和解決問題的能力,這對未來不論從事哪一行業或繼續攻讀博士都極具價值。歐陽林翔也鼓勵在校學生持續探索,善用資源,多參與不同活動,發掘自己的興趣所在。「大學是一個發現自我、確立方向的過程。可以嘗試各種可能,找到真正熱愛的事物。」歐陽林翔的成長正好展示了澳大培養自主學習、創新思考、國際視野人才的的教育理念。通過在澳大四年的學習與成長,他不僅積累了豐富的知識,更鍛煉了堅韌不拔的精神和開闊的眼界,這將成為他在未來數學之路中不斷前行的動力。
