The University of Macau (UM) held a talk titled ‘The Frontiers of Microelectronic Engineering over the Next Decade’ today (3 March) as part of its University Lecture Series. Mak Pui In, chair professor in the UM Faculty of Science and Technology and director of the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI, discussed in depth the future advances in microelectronic engineering. The talk was held in a hybrid format and attracted wide participation from the community.
Speaking at the event, UM Vice Rector Rui Martins, recounted Prof Mak’s journey from being a student captivated by circuits to becoming an internationally renowned scholar in microelectronics. He also highlighted Prof Mak’s academic and research achievements, as well as the local and international honours and accolades he has received.
During the talk, Prof Mak analysed the challenges and opportunities arising from the integration of integrated circuits (ICs) and artificial intelligence (AI), and offered forward-looking insights into how microelectronics technologies can enhance quality of life. He also introduced several emerging fields set to drive the next wave of engineering breakthroughs, such as edge AI chips for wearables and robotics, and ultra-low-power radio chips for battery-free wireless connectivity.
In addition, Prof Mak engaged with the audience during the Q&A and discussion session, which was moderated by Martins.

澳門大學今(3)日舉辦“大學講壇”,由澳大科技學院講座教授、模擬與混合信號集成電路全國重點實驗室主任麥沛然以“未來十年微電子工程的發展前沿”為題發表演說,深入探討微電子工程的變革方向。講座以線上線下形式進行,吸引社會各界人士參與。
澳大副校長馬許願(Rui Martins)致辭時表示,他與麥沛然相識超過20年,亦師亦友,見證麥沛然從一個對電路充滿好奇的學生,成長為國際知名微電子研究學者,不僅學術成就斐然,領導能力亦日漸成熟。麥沛然專注於模擬和射頻集成電路設計及交叉學科工程研究,於2024年當選葡萄牙里斯本科學院(ACL)外籍通訊院士,是首位在澳門出生及接受教育的ACL外籍通訊院士,同年更獲澳門特區政府頒發教育功績勳章。他曾發表逾300篇學術論文,研究成果深受國際肯定,並擔任中國科學院海外評審專家、國際電機電子工程師學會(IEEE)會士、英國工程技術學會(IET)會士和英國皇家化學學會(RSC)會士。
麥沛然在講座上指出,隨著集成電路(IC)與人工智能(AI)技術的深度融合,微電子將在重塑人類與環境的互動體驗方面發揮關鍵作用,令互動趨於更加積極主動且高度個性化。透過分析IC與AI融合過程中的挑戰與機遇,他為微電子技術如何重塑人們生活品質提供了前瞻性見解。另外,麥沛然亦介紹了有望引領下一波工程突破的新興領域,包括應用於穿戴式裝置及機械人的節能型邊緣人工智能芯片、為無電池無線連接提供技術支撐的超低功耗無線電芯片等,並提及透過易用的先進診療設備,促進高效家庭醫療保健系統轉型。
問答及交流環節由馬許願主持,麥沛然和與會者交流互動,討論氣氛熱烈。
