The University of Macau (UM) has made rapid advances in the field of computer science in recent years, achieving remarkable progress. In the 2026 US News Global University Subject Rankings, UM’s Artificial Intelligence discipline was ranked 51st worldwide, while Computer Science ranked 89th worldwide, entering the global top 100 for the first time. At the same time, in the newly released 2026 CSRankings, a globally recognized authoritative ranking in computer science, UM demonstrated outstanding performance in the field of Computer Systems, achieving a position among the world’s leading institutions.
According to the data, over the past three years (2023–2025), UM ranked 18th globally in the broad systems category—including computer architecture, operating systems, and high-performance computing (AI infrastructure)—and 1st in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area, showcasing strong academic foundations and comprehensive research capabilities.
Most notably, UM excelled in the core subfield of High-Performance Computing, ranking 7th worldwide and 1st in the Greater Bay Area. This achievement highlights UM’s deep expertise and leading advantages in cutting-edge areas such as computer parallel processing and large-scale systems designed for AI applications.
UM’s research in the systems field is led by Dean Xu Chengzhong of the Faculty of Science and Technology. The team brings together several scholars with substantial experience in systems research, including Professor Zhou Xiaobo, who has made significant contributions to high-performance computing and operating systems; Assistant Professor Xu Huanle, who works at the forefront of computer architecture and distributed systems; and Assistant Professor Li Li, who conducts innovative research in operating systems and embedded systems. The team has long focused on core areas of computer systems and has continuously published a series of high-quality research results in top international academic conferences, establishing strong academic impact.
The field of computer systems forms the foundation of information technology and AI applications. It directly determines the efficiency, security, reliability, and energy efficiency of computing systems, and serves as the essential backbone for the development of artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, and other cutting-edge applications. UM’s outstanding performance in this field reflects its capacity for independent innovation in fundamental technologies and lays a solid academic foundation for the development of next-generation computing infrastructure.
CSRankings is widely recognized as one of the most authoritative global rankings in computer science. Its evaluation system is entirely based on the number of papers published by an institution’s faculty in top-tier academic conferences, aiming to objectively reflect the recent research output and academic influence of universities across various subfields of computer science.
