In our daily lives, it is almost certain that we will have direct contact with various mechanical components from fasteners, bearing, gears to elevators or automobiles at any given moment. The mechanical design process of these products is governed by a set of requirements that includes functions, safety, reliability, manufacturability and maintenance. Therefore, the understanding of mechanical design is of fundamental importance for the cultivation and the development of the scientific interests of local future talents. The proposed summer camp will focus on activities based on mechanical design of mechanical structures for load bearing applications.

During the 2 days of the proposed summer camp, participants will have hands-on practices for the creation of working scaled models based on real-life structures, and, in the meantime, learning the physics and engineering principles of these structures in order to solve common problems found in mechanical design. Laboratories/industrial visits will be arranged for participants such that they can have a better understanding of Electromechanical Engineering.

Research and development on analog-and-mixed signal integrated circuits is a core component of the semiconductor industry. It lays the foundation of the entire system-on-chip that enables multifarious features in electronic devices nowadays. The State-Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI Laboratory at the University of Macau has outstanding research output in this area. In order to attract local high school students to participate in analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits design, our Lab proposes to organize an Integrated Circuit Design Summer Camp for them. By participating in this camp, the participants can gain clearer ideas of what integrated circuits are and their importance in modern society. In addition, our Lab will also introduce the prospect of integrated circuits design and the semiconductor industry by using cutting-edge examples from around the globe. As such, they will gain foresight and have better plans for their future. Last but not least, they can also learn fundamental concepts of research and design, technical communication, and performing experiments and measurements in this camp, improving their Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) skills.

The summer camp can be divided into four parts:

a) Introduction to Integrated Circuits design

The instructors will introduce what an integrated circuit is, how the integrated circuit is manufactured, and its functionality through a series of seminars and activities.

b) Guide tour at the State-Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI Laboratory and brief the research activity

The instructor will provide a guided tour of the State-Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI Laboratory. We will brief them on the research activity conducted at the Lab and showcase our designed chips during the tour. The participants will have chances to interact with the designers of the chips and see the actual fabricated integrated circuits on-site.

c) Design, Simulation, and Measurement of the Basic Integrated Circuits

The instructor will organize a design and simulation workshop for the participants such that they can understand the flow of designing integrated circuits. Also, a section for measuring existing integrated circuits will be provided to the participants so they can have hands-on experience in performing electrical measurements. Through this process, they can understand how to characterize the performance of the circuits and test the functionality.

d) Idea sharing and exchanging

We will divide the students into small groups to perform the measurement and design such that they can learn to communicate and cooperate with others. They will also have the opportunity to share and exchange the ideas they gain during the measurement after the section and learn from each other. Through this sharing and exchange, the participants will understand the design process and principle, increasing their enthusiasm for the research activity.
