The IMechE 8th Greater China Design Competition, which is organized by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Hong Kong Branch and co-organized by Department of Electromechanical Engineering (EME) of FST, was held from 23 to 24 March 2019 at the Student Activity Centre (E31) of the University of Macau. The Greater China Design competition is an university design competition for the universities from Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Macau including the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Guangzhou College of South China University of Technology, the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Tsing Yi), the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the South China University of Technology, the University of Hong Kong, and the University of Macau.

The competition aims at providing a platform for engineering students to demonstrate their engineering knowledge, while in parallel strengthen their presentation skills by designing an innovative prototype on the topics ranging from environmental to social issues. This year, the topic is ‘Energy Relay’. Participants are asked to design and build four self-propelled devices which can collectively complete a relay race in the shortest period of time. By encouraging students to participate in such competition, students can broaden their horizons, gain more knowledge and learn more about different aspects, which will also benefit students’ future career and development.
