Abstract

Fiber metal laminates (FMLs) are composed of metal layers and fiber layers, which are stacked in an alternating sequence of an aluminum or titanium alloy sheet and glass or carbon fiber reinforced resin prepreg. As a novel lightweight hybrid material in the aviation industry, FMLs offer a unique combination of properties such as high specific static properties and excellent impact resistance, along with outstanding fracture and fatigue resistance; these materials have been successfully utilized in the upper fuselage skin structures of the Airbus 380 and the cargo floor of the Boeing 777. In this presentation, I will briefly overview the recent development of novel FMLs based on aluminum-lithium alloys, forming technology for FMLs components, evaluation methods for some mechanical properties, and modification technique of the interface through grafting carbon nanotubes. Apart from the aviation industry, FMLs will also find their application in skin panel of high-speed train and energy absorber of new energy vehicle.

Biography

Prof. Jie Tao is currently a professor at College of Materials Science and Technology, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA). From February 2001 to January 2002, he worked in the Manchester Materials Science Centre at the University of Manchester and UMIST as a visiting scholar. He was the dean of the College of Materials Science and Technology, NUAA from 1998-2008. Now he is the director of Institute of Advanced Materials and Forming Technology, NUAA. He has become Ford Motor Company Professor of materials science at NUAA since 2008. His current research interests are mainly focused on functional coatings, fiber metal laminates and forming technology of metallic materials. He has published 260 papers and 4 books, and acquired 36 patents granted.
