On 3rd September 2020, the Faculty of Science and Technology and Department of Physics and Chemistry have successfully held the first faculty lecture and departmental orientation event for the new undergraduate students. All freshmen undergraduate students, together with professors, admin staffs and some student of senior year within the department joined the event. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic precaution, the event was held in a hybrid platform with online and offline platform. First, the , Dean of FST, Prof. Cheng-Zhong Xu together with Associate Deans and department heads with FST made a warm welcome to all new students. Prof. Xu then gave the first lecture to the student using online Zoom platform. Dean Xu introduced the history and achievements of the Faculty, and encouraged undergraduate freshmen to learn how to study independently and to plan for their future wisely, and inspire them to participate more into exchange activities, enrich their knowledge by exploring the world. 

After Dean Xu’s lecture, our DPC department orientation event was held in face-to-face style. Our DPC department head, Prof. Hui Pan gave a warm welcome to all new students and made some addresses to the students. Associate Head, Prof. Bingpu Zhou, and other academic staffs also introduced the history of the department and the syllabus of our undergraduate programme. After the lectures by the academic staffs, old students from senior years also shared their first-hand experiences how the life and study are like in the Campus. 

The last part of the orientation was the laboratory tour. The students were split into two groups lead by Prof. Ng and Prof. Zhou. They were excited to be shown to our state-of-the-art research equipment that they may use in their research projects in the next four years, such as scanning tunneling microscopy, photolithography device fabrication etc.
