The Symposium on Ground Improvement Techniques, jointly organized by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the University of Macau, DSSOPT, The Macau Institution of Engineers (AEM), Civil Engineering Laboratory of Macau (LECM), Macau Association for Geotechnical Engineering and Hong Kong Geotechnical Engineering Society, took place at UM on 28th November 2008.

In this symposium, Experts and scholars from mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao including Eng. H. Novais Ferreira (LECM), Prof. A.T. Yeung (HKU), Prof. J.H. Wang (Jiao Tong University, Shanghai), Dr. H.I. Lee (EarthMac Asia) and Dr. Z-C. Mok (MAA, Taiwan) are invited to share their experience on the topic of ground improvement techniques to the engineering community of Macao. As the land resource is very limited in Macao, land reclamation and construction on unfavorable ground are more common nowadays. Thus, ground improvement has become an important portion of those projects. In this seminar, case histories from local and adjacent cities have been presented, and analysis, design, construction aspects of ground improvement have also been discussed.

The symposium had attracted more than 100 participants from Macau, Hong Kong, and Mainland. During the symposium, there are great interaction between audience and the speakers on the discussions about the technical issues presented and the speakers also responded to audiences’ questions with useful comments and suggestions.
