The University of Macau (UM) held the 33rd UM Scholar Research Forum today (21 April), where Lam Chi Seng, professor in the Institute of Microelectronics, the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI, and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Faculty of Science and Technology at UM, delivered a talk titled ‘Building a Low-Carbon Smart City – Advanced Power Electronics Technology’. The talk was well attended by students, faculty, and members of the public.
During the talk, Prof Lam examined the challenges posed by the increasing integration of high-power systems, such as solar power installations, large data centres, electric vehicles (EVs), and automated guided vehicles (AGVs) used in logistics and warehousing, into urban power grids. He also analysed whether emerging technologies can provide smarter charging solutions for EVs, AGVs, and drones. Furthermore, Prof Lam presented methods to improve the performance of power quality compensation systems and wireless power transfer systems, and illustrated how these systems can be integrated with solar energy systems to maximise efficiency.
