Michael Chu Hong Lam, a first-year undergraduate student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Macau (UM), has been elected an undergraduate student representative of the Membership Committee of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Instrumentation and Measurement Society in a global election out of thousands of members around the world. Chu is the only one from Macao to be elected an undergraduate student representative of this committee.

The IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society serves as the professional incubator for the growth of all (particularly younger) members and is dedicated to developing and using electrical and electronic instruments and equipment for measuring. The impact factor of the society’s journal is 3.067. The society also seeks to promote collaboration and exchange among its members to push for excellence in the area. Currently, the society has more than 10,000 members, with about 50 chapters and student braches worldwide. The committee is formed by professors and students at Xian Jiaotong University of China, the Missouri University of Science and Technology in the United States, the University of Sannio and the Polytechnic University of Turin in Italy, and RWTH Aachen University in Germany. As an undergraduate student representative, Chu will be responsible for assisting the society in formulating future development policies and developing award criteria.

Since secondary school, Chu has participated in many competitions and won many awards, including a second prize at the IEEE RFID Flash Competition in 2019, a first prize at the 14th Soong Ching Ling Junior Invention Awards in 2018, a gold award at China (Shanghai) International Exhibition of Inventions, a silver award at VEX Robotics World Championship, a first prize at 2017 Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Robotics Elite Invitational Tournament, a gold award and the championship at Macau Tech Challenge 2017, a gold award at the 22nd National Exhibition of Inventions as well as a special award from the Baowu group, a first prize and a third prize at the 15th Guangdong Youth Invention Award, and a gold award at Kaohsiung International Invention and Design EXPO.

Chu is a member of the Wireless Communication Laboratory of the ECE, involved in studies of underwater communications, UAV wireless communication, and RFID measurement under the supervision of Prof Tam Kam Weng. He is also an active participant in STEM-related training and activities at UM’s Centre for Science and Engineering Promotion and provides assistance to STEM projects in local secondary schools and talent development programmes organised under the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund.
